Dear...Well...Everybody.
Being alone sucks, in fact it sucks so much that people make events to go just to not be alone. Sadly people are also cruel. People are so cruel that they make each other feeling they are forced to change who they are just so they do not end up alone and if a person does not comply, then not only is that person alone, they are also subjected to bullying, rejection, humiliation, and even mental illness. All that for nothing more than just existing a certain way.
The children's stories we read as a child failed in their missions to teach us that being “us” is ok. Despite being told that different was a good thing and yet 25% of children from grades 4 to 6 are bullied everyday and Canada ranks 9th out of 35 countries for people 13 years old being bullied,("Canadian Bullying Statistics.") not a statistic to be proud of and an alarming amount of the bullying is targeted around people who are considered “different”. The fat kid, the dumb kid, the poor kid, the kid that talks funny, the kid who looks funny. No one gets bullied for being too normal.
This bullying hurt the victim more than the bruises. According to the Stats Canada, “Any participation in bullying increases risk of suicidal ideas in youth.”(Government of Canada,) but bullying is not the only way people that do not fit in are at risk of suicide. It goes without saying that being an outsider is lonely. Not quite belonging anywhere or with anyone. Loneliness goes hand in hand with depression which is almost always a main reason for suicide.
It is easy to say all this is wrong, but we give into this mentality everyday. Every rumour, every rude remark just pushes people further away from society. The world today is separated, we are surrounded by “hot or not” articles. Some random stranger with a computer has the power to make someone either accepted or shunned. And who gets blamed but “society”. Society is defined as “The aggregate of people in a more or less ordered community.” ("Society - Definition Of Society In English...). Society is people, yet people use it as a by word to place blame on because of course they are not the problem.
The paradox that plagues our race is that it is both in our nature to not want to be alone and to drive people away. Humans are made to be in groups but it seems that we also have the need to tear people apart. It takes a special kind of person to be naturally kind. As for the rest of us, we have the choice to bring in a person or or force them into being alone.
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”~Ralph Waldo Emerson
